Source
Each coin comes from a European Commission notice titled New national side of euro coins intended for circulation
, published in the C series of the Official Journal of the European Union since 2004. Every coin links to its notice on EUR-Lex.
Copied, not rewritten
The subject, design description, mintage and issue date are copied from the English version of the notice. Where the Commission later published a corrigendum, the coin notes it.
Images
The pictures are the ones printed in the notices. Older notices have small scans, so image quality varies from year to year.
Countries
Coins from 20 euro area countries and from the four states that issue euro coins under a monetary agreement with the EU: Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City.
Common issues
Coins with the same design issued by every euro area country: the Treaty of Rome (2007), economic and monetary union (2009), ten years of euro cash (2012), the EU flag (2015) and Erasmus (2022). Each country's version has its own name and inscription.
Joint issues
A subject shared by two or three countries, each with its own coin. The designs may differ.
Topics
Each coin is sorted into one or more topics (monuments, nature, arts, famous people and so on) from the words in its official subject. This is an automatic, unofficial classification, so a few coins may sit in a surprising place.
New coins
A coin appears once its notice is in the Official Journal, which is often months after the coin is issued. The catalogue is updated by hand.
